We are always on the lookout for fresh talent, particularly freelancers willing to work on an on-and-off basis over several months--or even years. We are seeking motivated individuals who are passionate about the world and its myriad peoples/places. Writers must produce top-quality, grammatically correct articles of 2,000+ words for Features and between 300 and 600 words for Tales from the Road (see site for examples).
Feature articles must transcend typical travel pieces, concentrating less, for example, on where to eat and more on some aspect of the "soul" of the topic. Practical details for visiting (i.e. costs, where to stay, suggestions, warnings, etc.) should be provided as a separate addendum (we call this section "Out of the Handbook") and should not play a significant role in the article itself. The article is an account--albeit mixed with history, science, cultural insights, etcetera--of your very personal "adventure journey."
Pay for features is $50 per article. Free press trips are available to writers whose work we deem to be of the highest caliber.
Tales from the Road are published but unpaid, though they may catch our eye and lead to further work.
Consistent work may lead to more permanent positions filling several of our Department vacancies.
TO SUBMIT A FEATURE ARTICLE OR TALE FROM THE ROAD, follow this simple, 3-step process:
STEP 1:
Create an Adventure Journey account by going to AJhub.com and clicking "Join" (free). Please edit your profile completely. This is important--if your piece is selected for publication, the article will contain a link to your profile page for the benefit of our readers. In this way our readers will be able to learn a little about you and, if desired, comment on your piece or contact you (via your account) with questions, praise, concerns, etc.
STEP 2:
If you are submitting a Feature, click the "Manage My Blog" link in your "My Tools" box. Now click "Write a New Blog Post." This is where you will write, paste, or upload (from Word) your submission. When you are finished with the article, click "Save." If you have photos to go along with it, they can be inserted into your Blog Post or you can create a Photo Album for them on your profile page.
If you are submitting a Tale from the Road, click the "Manage my Tales from the Road" link in your "My Tools" box. Now click "Write a New Tale." When you are finished with the Tale, click "Save." If you have photos to go along with it, they can be inserted directly into your Tale or you can create a Photo Album for them on your profile page.
STEP 3:
There are two ways to notify us of your submission: (1) Email the editors here with "submission" as the Subject line and your Adventure Journey username and the Blog's title (if you are submitting a Feature) or Tale's title (if you are submitting a Tale) in the email body, OR (2) Send a Private Message following the same format via your Adventure Journey account to the following username: AJadmin.
Pay will be sent via check or Paypal, depending on the writer's preference.
