A World of Water: Lake Powell BY EZRA JAMESON
(continued)
OUT OF THE HANDBOOK
HOW TO GET THERE: Lake Powell is 380 miles from Salt Lake City and 270 miles from Phoenix. Great Lakes Airlines (800/554-5111; www.greatlakesav.com) has daily flights from Denver and Phoenix into Page, Arizona, which is only minutes away from the lake by car. There are shuttle services at the airport provided by Lake Powell Resort.
WHAT TO DO: There are all sorts of tours, including the Rainbow Bridge National Monument tour. You can also take a guided hike through Antelope Canyon, or hike freely in an almost unlimited number of places around the lake. There are also hundreds of secluded beaches for swimming and playing, and Lake Powell is wonderful for fishing. It’s also great, of course, for house-boating, power-boating, water-skiing, jet-skiing, and so on. Houseboats, speedboats, and personal watercraft are all available for rent. You can also explore the Grand Circle, America's largest grouping of National and State Parks, monuments, and recreation areas in America. At Lake Powell you're only hours from the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Zion National Park, and just a few hours from Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado.
WHERE TO STAY/WHAT TO EAT: There are a number of different houseboats available and prices vary from season to season. They come in seven styles (and levels of luxury) and accommodate from six to twelve persons. Prices for a five-day, four-night houseboat trip range from $2,300 in the “budget” season, to $5,800 in the peak, summer months. The luxury 75-foot houseboats are only rented by the week, and the prices are the same year round, $11,000 to $12,000 per week, and there are various specials offered throughout the year (call 800/528- 6154 or go to www.lakepowell.com for more information). You can also stay at Lake Powell Resort at Wahweap Marina or Defiance House Lodge at Bullfrog Marina, rooms starting at $74 and $94 per night. Both the resort and the lodge offer dining and limited shopping. Family Units are a popular lodging choice for home-away-from-home comfort and are available at Bullfrog, Halls Crossing and Hite Marina, and start at $148 per night (again call 800/528-6154 or go to www.lakepowell.com for more information). And, of course, you can take your boat right up to a beach and camp for free. There are small entrance fees to get into the Recreation Area, but there are no fees for launching or camping on the beach. The only designated campsites in the Recreation Area are the RV Parks and Campgrounds found at the marinas. The shoreline camping can be done anywhere, except at a marina complex, or at Rainbow Bridge. There are no designated campsites developed on the lake. There are 8 floating facilities, spread around the whole lake, where one can use the restroom, or empty and clean a porta-pottie or pump-out a vessel's sewage holding tank.
