WHAT MAKES THIS HISTORIC?

The Zambezi was first explored at length by Europeans when Livingstone undertook his historic expedition along that great African river. But even he didn't come close to traversing the river's entire length. Since then, others have walked, trekked, rafted, and otherwise boated large stretches of this mighty river, but as far as we can surmise no team has ever successfully traversed the entire length of the river, moving upriver from mouth to source. We hope to be the first.

BLOG: Pre-expedition - "Zambezi Team Faces Legal Hurdle"

As Part of "From Ocean to Sky," the Zambezi expedition aims to traverse--by boat or on foot--the entire length of the Zambezi River, from its mouth near Vila do Chinde, Mozambique, to its source close to Ndumbakahehu, Zambia--a 2,574-kilometer (1,599-mile) journey. There are three conditions: (1) the writers must never stray more than a mile from either bank; (2) the writers must not spend more than $2,000 total; and (3) the writers must perform their assignment over exactly six months--from 15 September 2009 to 15 March 2010.

Follow the complete Zambezi route on the expedition's Maps/Route page.

MEET THE TEAM

SEBASTIAN STENT, 27, is a freelance writer and film maker. He has traveled extensively across southern Africa and written for a number of South African newspapers and magazines. He has experienced many adventures, but nothing that could completely prepare him for the epic expedition he is about to undertake.

JOZUA MALHERBE, 26, Sebastian's comrade-in-arms, has traveled extensively with his friend across southern Africa in search of adventure--and the next great film to shoot. He has produced or directed dozens of independent films and TV ads.
