WHAT MAKES THIS HISTORIC?
The Danube, stretched as it is across the heart of Europe, has been
traveled often. One of our advisers has himself done it three times, from source to mouth. Our expedition differs in that we are traveling upriver, from mouth to source, and we are doing it in the middle of the winter months. The team will be walking much of the way, always hugging the banks of the mighty waterway. As far as we
can ascertain, a journey of this nature, meeting the above-mentioned criteria, has never been done along the Danube before. This would be the first.

BLOG: Pre-expedition - "Danube Team Explores Bicycle Option"
As Part of "From Ocean to Sky," the Danube expedition aims to traverse--by boat or on foot--the entire length of the Danube River, from its mouth near Sulina, Romania, to its source close to Geisingen, Germany--a 2,860-kilometer (1,777-mile) journey. There are three conditions: (1) the writers must never stray more than a mile from either bank; (2) the writers must not spend more than $3,000 total; and (3) the writers must perform their assignment over exactly six months--from 15 September 2009 to 15 March 2010.
