WHAT MAKES THIS HISTORIC?

As far as we know, the Colorado River was first traversed by John Wesley Powell's expedition, though he didn't do the entire length of the river. Since then, various stretches of the Colorado have been completed by thousands of explorers, tourists, rafting enthusiasts, trekkers, and others. However, a complete traverse moving upriver from mouth to source during the winter has, as far as we can judge, never been accomplished. We aim to be the first.

BLOG: Pre-expedition - "In Search of a Campsite Trail"

As Part of "From Ocean to Sky," the Colorado expedition aims to traverse--by boat or on foot--the entire length of the Colorado River, from its mouth near Campo, Mexico to its source in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado--a 2,330-kilometer (1,450-mile) journey. There are three conditions: (1) the writers must never stray more than a mile from either bank; (2) the writers must not spend more than $3,000 total; and (3) the writers must perform their assignment over exactly six months--from 15 September 2009 to 15 March 2010.

Follow the complete Colorado route on the expedition's Maps/Route page.
