WHAT MAKES THIS HISTORIC?

The Brahmaputra was walked by Mark Shand--though he skipped the Great Bend portion which we hope to complete. Several people have trekked or kayaked portions of the river--but never close to the whole thing. But even Shand began at the source, as most "river explorers" do. We intend to traverse the entire length of the river from mouth to source in the middle of winter, which, to the best of our knowledge, has not been accomplished.

BLOG: Pre-expedition - "Team to Face Steep Jungle-Covered Canyons"

As Part of "From Ocean to Sky," the Brahmaputra expedition aims to traverse--by boat or on foot--the entire length of the Brahmaputra River, from its mouth at the Bay of Bengal on the shores of Bangladesh to its source in the Kailash area of Tibet--a 2,900-kilometer (1,800-mile) journey. There are three conditions: (1) the writers must never stray more than a mile from either bank; (2) the writers must not spend more than $1,500 total; and (3) the writers must perform their assignment over exactly six months--from 15 September 2009 to 15 March 2010.

Follow the complete Brahmaputra route on the expedition's Maps/Route page.
