WHAT MAKES THIS HISTORIC?

The Amazon has, of course, been heavily traveled over the years. Indeed, the river acts as a highway of sorts for the local population. Four expeditions, including a kayaking team in 2007, have succeeded in traversing the length of the Amazon from source to sea. We plan to accomplish the same feat in reverse: traverse the Amazon from mouth to source, moving against the flow. As far as we can tell, this has never been done.

BLOG: Pre-expedition - "Amazon Team in Research Mode"

As Part of "From Ocean to Sky," the Amazon expedition aims to traverse--by boat or on foot--the entire length of the Amazon River, from its mouth near Macapa, Brazil, to its source high in the Peruvian Andes. There are three conditions: (1) the writers must never stray more than a mile from either bank; (2) the writers must not spend more than $3,000 total; and (3) the writers must perform their assignment over exactly six months--from 15 September 2009 to 15 March 2010.

Follow the complete Amazon route on the expedition's Maps/Route page.
