Martin watched as Giselle slipped back into his bunk, then smiled as she moved in for a kiss. They kissed for about fifteen minutes before he decided that it was time. Having decided, he pulled away from her and was surprised to find he didn't have the words. Outside the waves slopped lazily against the side of the yacht. Feeling a strange dizziness, he had to clear his throat. "I wanted to ask you something."

"Yes?"

He took his eyes away from her eyes and moved his gaze to her hair stretched across the pillow like golden thread from a fairy tale. Uncharacteristically, he was afraid. To fill the silence, he said, "Whatever happened with your novel?"

"My novel?"

"Yes ... the novel." Inside, he was kicking and dying, both at once.

"I gave it up ages ago."

"Really?" He resisted the urge to punch himself in the face. "I thought it was getting somewhere."

"It just seemed to me that life was more a series of unrelated episodes rather than a narrative." She ran her palm over his shoulder. "But I've been thinking about it again. There are connections I didn't understand when I was younger, that I wasn't patient enough to see. Sometimes the stories come clear only much later. Like this thing with you and me. Us. I mean-"

Confidence rousing, he interrupted her with a kiss. It was now or never. "There's something else I wanted to ask."

He said, "Will you marry me?"
